FA United 2012
But before we get into the convention, my weekend was pretty awesome in itself. It'd been almost two years since my last check-up with my primary doctor so I went in for that and despite gaining back a bunch of weight I'd been losing, doing well. Got an update for tetanus (I couldn't remember the last time I got a shot but figured I should get an update for the year of teh end of the world :P) - apparently they're mixing in whooping cough vaccine with that now too so I am safe to be around the childrens! Friday afternoon I went to Copake with my mom and did some swimming at their pond... which everytime I go there I am reminded of The Raft story from the movie Creepshow 2 - I mean seriously, except that it's smaller, the place reminds me much of that scene. Of course I tend to swim pretty quickly to the raft when I am hit with such senses of deja-vu :P We stopped by Bashbish Falls next and I had my first swim there in at least a few years, it's freakin' freezing but so damn refreshing. Some other folks were there as well, a few were swimming (not as many as I'd seen in previous years and nobody taking the nestea plunge off the large rock... something I'd never do, the deep part is deep but it's still nature and not to be trusted). Would've ended the day with a free ticket to see Paranorman but was feeling tired at that point and didn't want to be dreaming on the trip to NJ.
Didn't really do me a lot of good cuz I didn't get much sleep, so slept in a bit saturday morning before heading to the convention. Thankfully the drive was shorter than I thought it'd be, managed to arrive just short of 10am (opening time for registration so in my mind perfect timing). Wandered around the con abit, saw some locals from NY and many more from NJ or further away. Kicked myself again for not going out of my way to bring my own fursuit, first con in a long time where I haven't fursuited, but it did allow me to take pics of the fursuit parade and group photo at the end.
FAU tends to be a relaxicon for me, it's one of the smaller cons but it's the closest one to my location and tends to have the largest concentration of locals - so mostly it's chilling at the con suite or at someone's room or roaming the dealer's room or what have you. And this year fell into that sort of groove as well, though on a much shortened time table. So I didn't get to see any panels but I did pick up a few things from the dealer's room, I did get some photos (which I'll have to remember to add to this post later - though a few are already on facebook), and mostly just chat with people I haven't seen in a long time or consistently in a long time.
Pretty much ended the con grabbing some dinner with Happy Pup, RJ Wolf, and Soron... with service that tended to be a bit clumsier than I've experienced in awhile ^.^;;;
I have to say that this hotel is much nicer than the last one, possibly too nice for our little fandom... yeah, way too classy for us XD I really wish I had my fursuit now because this hotel had a lot more lobby space to wander, the previous ran into the whole congestion of too narrow or small a space for even a small group. Oh and apparently some of the Jets were at the hotel? Was that players or fans? I did see some woman carrying what looked like a wedding dress, heard a wedding party was at the hotel that weekend too - I really wish I had been exposed to furry like that, staying at a hotel and then 'holy-shit look at that!' rather than finding it on the internet; firsthand surprises are so much more fun in life :)
